News Archives: July-December 2001

July 09, 2001:
The WB announced on Sat. July 07, 2001 during Cardcaptors, that Toonami would be coming to the WB on July 30, 2001. However it has not been announced what shows will be playing, when they will be playing, and if Cartoon Network will continue playing Toonami.

Starlights Make Guest Appearence in Novel
July 14, 2001:

The Starlights make an apearence in Diane Duane's The Wizard's Dilemma. Although not discussed by name, it's undeniably them. What other cartoon pop group from Japan has three guys with long ponytails?:
The VCR was running, and on the TV, some kind of cartoon singing group--three slender young men with very long ponytails--seemed to be appearing in concert, while searchlights and lasers swept and flashed around them. It's not like the house isn't full of her wierd J-pop half the time to start with, Kit thought, but she's got cartoon J-pop, too? Oh well. It's an improvement on the heavy metal. [Italics Original]
--Duane, Diane. The Wizard's Dilemma. San Diego: Harcourt, 2001, 192.

The Wizard's Dilemma is part of a 5 [as of 2001] book series, "Young Wizards", which started back in 1983. The series follows the exploits of Nita Callahan and her friend Kit as they become wizards and fight against the evil "Lone Power", who invented death and entropy. Other books in the series include, So You Want to be a Wizard?, Deep Wizardry, High Wizardry, A Wizard Abroad, and The Wizard's Dilemma. All of the books are available through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and your local bookstore. You can also visit Diane Duane's website, The Owl Springs Partnership.
This is the first book in the series to mention Anime (the others were written before it became more well known and the majority were written before Sailormoon was created and before it became popluar). I highly suggest these books; see if you can also catch the reference to Pokemon in the fifth one.

July 21, 2001:
During the 10:30 (AM) special showing of Cardcaptors on the WB, on July 21, 2001, a commercial advertising Toonami's move to the WB appeared. While the ad did not say what shows would be on the WB's Toonami, it did show 4-box clip of one block of Batman Beyond, followed by two blocks of Pokemon, followed by one block of DBZ. The ad also mentioned that the WB's Toonami will include a "Toonami Giveaway" and C-toons. [A WB creation where you receive a code word then go to the WB's site, enter the code, and receive an electronic card, which you can collect]. The ad also mentioned a part on the WB's Toonami called, "Toonami Trax" which will be "cutting edge music videos." The WB's Toonami will be staring Monday, July 30, 2001.
